Health insurance

Health insurance in Mexico, without surprises

Private hospitals in Mexico are excellent, and they expect payment. I'll help you choose a major medical plan with a deductible and coinsurance you can live with.

Medicare and Mexico

What Medicare does, and doesn't, do here

Gap

Original Medicare

Original Medicare generally doesn't cover health care you receive outside the United States, including in Mexico. There are narrow exceptions, mostly near the border.

Limited

Medigap travel benefit

Many Medigap plans include a foreign travel emergency benefit, typically for the first 60 days of a trip and with a lifetime limit. It's meant for trips, not for living here.

Solution

A Mexican major medical plan

Covers hospitalization, surgery and serious illness at private hospitals in Mexico. Some plans add coverage abroad.

How it works

How much would you pay for a hospital stay?

Your plan doesn't pay from the first peso. You first cover the deductible, a fixed amount, and then a percentage of the rest, the coinsurance, commonly 10% or 20%.

Many plans cap the coinsurance you pay per event. Waiting periods apply to some conditions, and pre-existing conditions are usually excluded, so it pays to buy before you need it.

  • Higher deductible: lower premium
  • Coinsurance cap: your cost has a limit
  • Maximum entry ages vary by insurer

Example (Condusef figures, MXN)

Treatment cost$100,000
Deductible (you pay)$10,000
10% coinsurance on $90,000 (you pay)$9,000
You pay in total$19,000
The insurer pays$81,000

Illustrative example. Every plan has its own amounts and conditions.

FAQ

Health insurance questions

Is there an age limit to buy a policy?

Each insurer sets maximum entry ages, and premiums rise with age. If you're considering a policy, it's better to apply sooner rather than later.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Usually not. It's essential to declare them when applying: leaving them out can lead an insurer to deny a claim.

Can I use the policy in the US or Canada?

Some plans include emergency coverage abroad or international options. We'll compare them if you travel often.

Do I need residency?

Requirements vary by insurer. Some ask for residency or a Mexican address. I'll find the options that fit your situation.

Will you help me with a claim?

Yes. I'll tell you which documents to gather, help with the paperwork in Spanish and follow up with the insurer.
