Car insurance

Mexican car insurance, in plain English

Whether your car has Mexican or foreign plates, I'll find the right coverage among leading Mexican insurers and help you if you ever have an accident.

Before you drive

Why your policy from home isn't enough

Coverage gap

Limited or no coverage

Most US and Canadian policies offer limited or no coverage once you cross the border, and they don't cover your liability to third parties in Mexico.

Legal

Liability is the law on federal roads

Vehicles on Mexico's federal roads and bridges must carry third-party liability insurance (Article 63 Bis of the federal roads law). Some states have their own requirements.

Claims

Accidents are handled differently

In Mexico, adjusters from each insurer come to the scene. Having a Mexican policy and a local advisor makes a stressful moment far easier.

Coverage levels

Liability, limited or full coverage

Mexican insurers offer three common levels. The difference is how much they protect you and your car, not just others.

FAQ

Car insurance questions

Does my US or Canadian policy cover me in Mexico?

Usually only in a limited way, if at all, and it won't cover your liability to others in Mexico. You need a Mexican policy, at minimum for third-party liability.

Can you insure a car with foreign plates?

There are policies for foreign-plated vehicles. Requirements depend on your immigration status and the vehicle's temporary import permit. Message me and we'll review your case.

What should I do after an accident?

Call your insurer's claims line from the scene, don't admit fault or negotiate with the other driver, take photos and message me. I'll guide you through the process.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Most insurers allow monthly, quarterly or semi-annual payments, sometimes with a small surcharge compared with paying annually.

Will the policy cover me when I drive back to the US or Canada?

Some Mexican policies include liability coverage in the US and Canada; others don't. We'll check it when choosing your policy.
